Influence of Low‐Frequency PNA Variability on MJO Teleconnections to North American Atmospheric River Activity
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) modulates atmospheric river (AR) activity along the West Coast of North America. forecast skill ARs based solely on MJO phase is limited, motivating identification other predictive factors. Here we show that low-frequency variability Pacific/North American (PNA) pattern mostly independent MJO, and monthly PNA influences MJO-AR relationship much more robustly than large-scale patterns such as El Niño Southern Oscillation quasi-biennial oscillation. During PNA+ conditions, when Pacific jet exit region located further east average, baroclinic wave packets extend downstream toward clear contrast in packets' zonal scale results partitioning active inactive AR phases. influence most significant over Northwest America, where landfall frequent, with implied forecasting beyond 20 days.

Alternative Theories of Atmospheric Teleconnections and LowFrequency Fluctuations
Observational studies have revealed a rich low-frequency structure in the atmosphere. A review of the theories, observations, and model studies of this low-frequency atmospheric variability is presented. On time scales of weeks or longer the atmosphere appears to possess distinct oscillatory behavior in welldefined and persistent "centers of action." This behavior is also an endemic feature of ...
متن کاملThe effect of the MJO on the North American Monsoon
The effect of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the eastern Pacific on the North American monsoon is documented using NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and daily mean precipitation data from 1958 to 2003. It is found that positive zonal wind anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific lead to above-normal precipitation in northwest Mexico and Arizona from several days to over a week later. This connectio...
متن کاملNortheast US precipitation variability and North American climate teleconnections interpreted from late Holocene varved sediments.
A more thorough understanding of regional to hemispheric hydroclimate variability and associated climate patterns is needed in order to validate climate models and project future conditions. In this study, two annually laminated (varved) sediment records spanning the last millennium were analyzed from Rhode Island and New York. Lamination thickness time series from the two locations are signifi...
متن کاملNonlinear atmospheric teleconnections
Neural network models are used to reveal the nonlinear winter atmospheric teleconnection patterns associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and with the Arctic Oscillation (AO) over the N. Hemisphere. The nonlinear teleconnections (for surface air temperature, precipitation, sea level pressure and 500 hPa geopotential height) are found to relate quadratically to the ENSO and AO in...
متن کاملInfluence of Landscape Variability on Atmospheric Dispersion
Using idealized distributions of surface moisture, it is shown that with a significant synoptic prevailing flow over these regions of surface variability, dispersion is generally enhanced over heterogeneous surfaces as compared to horizontally homogeneous conditions. The importance of the heterogeneity becomes less, however, as the large scale wind speed increases and/or the spatial scale of th...
